Everyone needs roses in winter. Here’s a neat way to capture spring and summer bounty on your table, Sharon pink depression glass, a pattern full of roses.
See what I mean about the roses? I’m showing the entire table in Sharon pink depression glass – we have quite a bit in stock and it’s nice to be able to use all one pattern once in a while. The pink glass color is a warm rich pink, not washed out and not strident, just nice friendly depression glass pink.
During the depression housewives needed to be thrifty as often there was no money for anything besides bare necessities. Smart ladies took advantage of the premiums companies offered, things like “buy a bag of oatmeal and get a dinner plate for free”. Or stores offered different pieces of a given pattern over a long time and you could get basic dinnerware pieces almost for free.
Some grocery stores do that yet today. Dave and I got a set of everyday Blue Willow from Kroger to go with our good Blue Willow china. (Yes, I do like Blue Willow!) Of course, if you ever took advantage of dish offers like these you know the little gotcha. The serving pieces tend to be pricey.
Do you see the serving bowl? This would have been one of the more expensive pieces, or possibly you had to send money and coupons off to the manufacturer to get it. Money being tight, few people got all the pieces.
Sharon has many many pieces, which makes it a fun pattern to collect and use. For example, there are two sizes of round serving bowls, this large 10 inch one and a smaller one that is 8 1/2 inches and an oval bowl to boot. Now these are reasonably priced, about $30-50. Sharon is one of the more affordable popular patterns in pink.
How do you like the candy jar? Isn’t that a neat piece? Besides the candy jar, you can get a covered butter dish, tumblers in several sizes, serving pieces galore, a cake plate plus a full dinner serving.
Federal Glass made Sharon in green and amber besides the pink, plus a few pieces of clear. The amber is pretty and among the most affordable depression glass patterns. Green also looks great. Federal had good colors.
One last picture, this time a top view.
Thank you to Susan from Between Naps on the Porch for hosting this fun event.
