Roxana is a truly tiny pattern and not one you’ll see very often. I had the chance to buy a piece but passed on it due to some inner rim roughness and so have no photo to share with you.
Roxana has some distinctive design elements. The main motif is a square with acanthus leaves on all sides. The square has 4-petaled flowers and beading on the inside. On plates the motif is in the center with the stylized acanthus leaves held stiffly out to both sides, top and bottom; the motif on the rims has the leaves are on both sides and towards the center, with some frilly bits along the top of the square.
Like many Hazel Atlas depression patterns, the plates and most bowls have wide, flat scalloped rims. The sherbet also has a narrow scalloped rim around the top. And is typical of this piece shape, it is easy to nick those rims on their inner edge.
Hazel Atlas only made Roxana in a light yellow they called “Golden Topaz”, some crystal and white opaque Platonite and they only made it for a year, 1932. The yellow is the easiest to find. Just now (October 2024) I see several bowls, plates and sherbets in yellow, none in crystal or Platonite, at least none that are called “Roxana”.
This is a tiny pattern. You might find the small 4 1/2 inch wide bowl, 5 inch berry bowl, the 6 inch flat cereal bowl, 5 1/2 inch plate, 6 inch sherbet liner with a cup ring to hold the sherbet, the sherbet and a tumbler. The tumbler looks like many Hazel Atlas tumblers, round, flat and flared at the top. Please note the 4 1/2 inch wide bowl is considerably deeper than the others, 2 3/8 inches, and it lacks the flat rim. (It reminds me of the finger bowls in some of the older elegant patterns.) Today on eBay I didn’t see this deeper bowl.
Despite being a scarce pattern Roxana is not particularly costly. Remember that demand is the biggest price driver, no solely supply. There are not many collectors.
If you like dessert plates or small bowls or yellow depression glass then consider a piece or two of Roxana. It’s probably easier to find now than later.
