Isn’t this an elegant looking piece of depression glass? Pink depression glass relish tray is Old Colony by Hocking. This is pressed glass, mass produced, but it looks like quality.
Hocking made Old Colony in pink and clear. Lancaster made similar design in topaz and other colors and if you find something besides pink or clear it is most likely by Lancaster.
The plates and bowls all have the interesting lace edge. Hocking made a footed tumbler that had the lace edge on the foot – I can only imagine how few of those survived! They made a flat tumbler that has vertical ribs about half way up the sides. Some of the bowls have ribs and some don’t. The cups are like the flat tumbler, with ribs up a little on the side but no open lace.
If you like this then you’ll want to get a good book on depression glass, such as Collector s Encyclopedia of Depression Glass,19th Edition (Collector’s Encyclopedia of Depression Glass). The pieces are interesting and some are hard to recognize as Old Colony. The book will help you know what pieces look like and give an idea of value. Don’t rely too much on the prices in this or any book but you can see which pieces are more valuable or which patterns are costly.
