We have several styles of plates to enjoy with American Sweetheart. Like many patterns that were very successful when made originally, MacBeth Evans released variations of the common pieces. You can find multiple styles of sherbets and bowls, and if you are lucky, even multiple styles of tumblers, tidbits and pitchers.
Here is the style of plate that I see most often here in Michigan. The rim is scalloped and about 1-2 inches wide and holds the pattern while the center is slightly scooped and plain.
MacBeth Evans made this plain center style in the bread and butter, salad, lunch and two dinner sizes. The luncheon and dinner plates are nearly the same size, between 9 and 10 1/4 inches wide, so always be sure to verify measurements if you seek a certain size.
The other style is very pretty but doesn’t look as plate-y to me. The rim is much wider and the design fills the center.
I’ve not seen as many pieces in this style, but there are salad, luncheon, dinner and three serving sized plates with the pretty pattern all over.
You’ll find all the styles and sizes in Monax white translucent American Sweetheart and a subset in pink. In fact all the pink American Sweetheart plates I’ve seen have had the all-over design, and I believe that’s true for the rare blue and red plates too.
When you shop for American Sweetheart online, check the photos and measurements and don’t hesitate to ask for clarification. When shopping in person feel free to mix and match the styles. American Sweetheart is so lovely that you won’t go wrong with any style!
