Fostoria made several etched patterns in the 1920s that used a lattice type primary motif with smaller motifs in between each lattice. It sounds complicated but let’s look at Melrose.
The lattice isn’t really a lattice – no cross hatching – but tiny flowers inside an outline. Other patterns, which I’ll show next week, have designs like fish scales instead of flowers. Even so, the patterns Melrose, Beverly, Virginia look similar enough at first glance that we need a good way to tell them apart.
Melrose has a small curved flower spray between the lattice shapes. That small flower is distinctive as the other lattice patterns have different secondary designs.
Fostoria made Melrose from 1924 to 1929 strictly in crystal and only on the simple shape shown, the 661 blank. It’s quite a pretty pattern that works well by itself or blended with others.
Next post I’ll show you Beverly.
