Have you been to a depression glass show? Go if you get a chance. You’ll see gorgeous, unusual glass in patterns and colors that will overwhelm you with the styles and beauty.
Hocking’s Mayfair is one of the most popular depression glass patterns, but it’s not been one of my favorites. I like the green better than the pink, and some of the shapes are lovely. But it never quite got into the “WOW” category. The glass show had a lot of the blue Mayfair, including this relish tray, a sweet pea vase, several bowls, even some dinnerware pieces. I kept going to the blue Mayfair, it really attracted me.
Here’s an extremely rare find, a set of American Sweetheart in ruby with gold trim. The dealer had the salver, lunch plates, cups and saucers. American Sweetheart is stunning in the rare ruby red or cobalt blue – and it’s lovely in the white monax and transparent pink. I’m not sure about the gold trim on these pieces as it doesn’t add much. What do you think?
Last year someone had several very rare pieces of monax American Sweetheart, including the sugar lid. I didn’t see those this year but another dealer had these rare pink tumblers. Be aware that the design is not as crisp on the tumblers as on plates. (The designs on tumblers in several patterns like Princess or Madrid also are less crisp. It’s not a flaw or a bad sign.)

I’ve loved Horseshoe from Indiana for years, but it’s rather hard to find in good condition. Indiana Glass made this pattern, and like several of their depression glass patterns, the seams are a bit rough.
Several dealers had Horseshoe in green and yellow and after seeing the serving bowls, I think I’ll pass on collecting this as a set. The plates are wonderful but the bowls have the pattern only in clusters around the sides. It would be a good pattern to combine with another so you can enjoy those wonderful tumblers, creamer and sugar and plates.
