Eldorado from Tiffin Glass has two griffins or dragons seated back to back with an urn between them on their tail side and elaborate scrolls between their fronts. It’s not one of Tiffin’s best known patterns, I’ve not seen it in the general multi-manufacturer elegant glass guides and came across only these crystal footed tumblers.
I thought about this pattern when I spotted a listing for Central Glass’s Harding etch which also features griffins/dragons. The Central design has the griffins facing each other so it’s easy to distinguish, but I had to look up which pattern my tumblers were since it’s been several years.
Eldorado is one of Tiffin’s older patterns, dating to the early depression, and they produced drink ware – stems, tumblers, pitchers – at least some plates and accessory items like candy dishes. Besides crystal they definitely etched some amber glass.
Given there are plates, creamers and sugars it’s likely Tiffin made tableware, maybe a small luncheon or dessert set. I can’t find information on the pattern unfortunately.
At the moment Eldorado is scarce at both Replacements and eBay. I found stemware on both and Replacements has the same tumbler I show. You may want to go to a glass show or contact dealers if you like this lovely design. The NDGA.net has some dealer advertisements.
Does Eldorado show dragons or griffins? Griffins in fantasy have eagle heads while dragons have lizard heads. It’s hard to tell in the etch but I’ll vote for dragons!
