Imperial Frosted Beaded Block Crystal Depression Glass Sugar Bowl from Mike A
Lesser Known Depression Glass from Imperial – Beaded Block, #710
Elegant and Depression Glass at the Allegan Antiques Market
Imperial made Beaded Block and the very similar Frosted Block from 1927 to 1930 in the usual colors of the era, pink, green, crystal, red, light blue, yellow, amber, then later in white, opalescent and iridescent colors. It’s pretty and there are a lot of fun pieces, many bowls, a pitcher, a few plates, vases, creamer and sugar. There is no cup or saucer nor tumblers. One of the neat pieces is a pear-shaped covered candy jar made long after the depression that you might see in milk glass or colors.
From the piece assortment, it looks as though Imperial intended Beaded Block to be an accessory/decorative pattern, or possibly aimed at serving snacks. There are plates, both square and round, ranging from 7 to 9 inches and several small bowls.
Most of the bowls either have handles or are rather oddly shaped to use for cereal, soup or a side dish. They are square or round, cupped or flared. The largest is round, 7 1/2 inches across.
You can choose oval pieces for pickles or celery. The pickle is 6 1/2 inches wide while the celery is a bit over 8 inches long. There is a small pitcher that holds about a pint.
There are three vases, one with flat rim is described as a “go along” or “go-with” or as a parfait, meaning it’s not truly part of this pattern.
Most pieces of Beaded Block except the smaller plates are not abundant. I didn’t see many at the glass shows and we only had one piece in the 20 years we bought and sold glass. Just now (February 2023) I found many pieces on eBay in several colors, including the beautiful and rare covered candy that is shaped like a pear. No color had more than a dozen items listed. Prices seemed in line to me, ranging from $10 to $30 for plates, small bowls of various shapes. This is not an easy pattern to collect but with patience you could get most pieces and have a lovely set of colored glass in unusual shapes.
