Several readers commented how lovely the Monax American Sweetheart plates were in the prior post. Let’s look at some of the decorations you might find on American Sweetheart.
Gold trimmed pieces are fairly common and normally the gold is coming off. Replacements shows a full dinner set with gold trim – cups, saucers, plates, bowls, a few serving pieces – but I’ve only found cups, creamers and sugars with the gold rims. Given how easily the gold comes off, it’s likely we had other pieces that had originally been trimmed but were plain by the time we got them.
Replacements shows a cobalt with silver trim that might sound gorgeous, but I think the silver detracts. American Sweetheart is so pretty and the cobalt is so spectacular that adding silver is like gilding the lily, a bit over the top.
We saw several pieces of blue and ruby red American Sweetheart at the depression glass shows last year; they are rare and you’re not likely to stumble across a set .
MacBeth Evans used some intriguing colors with Monax that have a lot of pizzazz. Gene Florence Collector’s Encyclopedia of Depression Glass shows pictures of Monax American Sweetheart with rim treatments in rose, green and yellow. These have darker edges that delicately shade away about half an inch into the rims. He shows a whole grouping with the Smoke trim, which is dark smokey blue on the edge and a wider shading into the rim. It’s pretty spectacular. Unfortunately neither Replacements no I have photos to share.
I’m not aware of any American Sweetheart pieces with hand-painted designs like we find with Monax Petalware; the Florette decorated plates are shown below so you can see what I mean. You’d think that people might have decorated the plates with plain centers like this, but apparently not so. (Replacements has a listing for bird decorated American Sweetheart), but no pieces in stock nor any photos. )
