One thing about Cameo that makes it fun to have is the huge variety of pieces, like the tumblers. Listings in books like Collector’s Encyclopedia of Depression Glass by Gene Florence show four sizes of footed tumblers, 5 ounce juice, 9 ounce, 11 ounce and a jumbo 15 ounce that was probably for iced tea or lemonade. I’m not sure what the 11 ounce size was meant for; since the capacity is measured right to the brim this would be a good size for ice water.
This 9 ounce size is the easiest to find and is 5 inches tall. The iced tea is 6 3/8 inches tall – that’s a pretty big footed drinking glass! That iced tea would be worth picking up – my book shows it worth $650! Unless you really really want a big glass, I suggest using the 9 ounce one at a more reasonable $25-35.
We have a plethora of flat tumblers too, ranging from tall and skinny to short and skinny with a few wider ones too. I don’t have a photo of them all together (note to self here!) but let’s go through what we do have.
The juice is 3 3/4 inches tall, only a little shorter than the 4 inch water tumbler, but it’s much narrower and looks tiny.
Water glass is a good size for daily use, easy to hold and has pleasing dimensions. It holds 9 ounces filled to the brim and is likely the most common size. Both of the large sets of Cameo I bought had this size glass. Books say this is 4 inches tall but mine vary from about 3 7/8 to 4 inches.
The next two in size area closes, a 10 ounce that is 4 3/4 inches tall and a 11 ounce that is 5 inches. As close as they are in size they should look about the same. This photo shows the 11 ounce one and I measured it at 5 inches tall.
There is a flat iced tea too, that is 5 1/4 inches tall and holds 15 ounces filled right to the top. From the pictures in my book this is about the same shape as the 9 ounce water, a nice width that looks more balanced than the tall, thin 10 and 11 ounce tumblers. I find a wider glass is easier to drink out of, so if I were buying this for us to use I’d look for the 9 ounce water and this 15 ounce tea.
Interesting, there are fewer choices in yellow Cameo. You can get the 5 inch tall, 11 ounce flat, the iced tea or the footed 9 ounce water.
Although there are far fewer pieces of pink than yellow (or green) Cameo, Hocking made every size tumbler but one, the tall 15 ounce footed iced tea. I would think the pink ones were from beverage sets, maybe offered as a high end premium, except the pink pitchers are extremely rare. Mysteries like this make depression glass fun!
