Colonial Fluted Rope Green Depression Glass from Federal
Federal Glass made Colonial Fluted, aka Rope, from 1928 to 1932 in green only. Take a look at the top photo and notice the vertical flutes on the creamer body and the rope trim along the rim. True Colonial Fluted pieces have both these motifs. That rope-like trim gives this pattern its Rope nickname.
This is a small pattern with a luncheon size plate, no dinner plate, a few bowls, sherbet, creamer and sugar, cup and saucer. The only serving pieces are the 7 1/2 inch serving bowl, creamer and sugar. The sugar has a lid. There is no platter or pitcher.
This next photo is the small sherbet liner/6 inch plate. The luncheon plate is styled the same as the 6 inch sherbet liner above.
The sherbets in front and the cups on the right in this antique store display are Colonial Fluted. You’ll notice that the green matches the green on the sherbets stacked in the center of the photo which are Patrician, also from Federal Glass.
Since there are so few pieces of Colonial Fluted you might want to augment Colonial Fluted with two go-with patterns from Federal. Add luncheon plates in Federal’s small Hostess pattern which has the flutes and no rope.
Hostess pattern includes its own cups, saucers and sherbets which Colonial Fluted also has, but it is not always easy to find and Hostess can help fill in the blanks. There is a grill plate in Hostess pictured in Gene Florence’s Collector’s Encyclopedia of Depression Glass and I saw one on eBay too.
Since neither Colonial Fluted nor Hostess includes a dinner plate, look for a dinner plate that has the rope edge but no flutes. Among the very first glass purchases we made was a large set of Colonial Fluted that included Hostess and the Rope-Only plates. All the pieces went together, in fact, it wasn’t until I read more about the pattern that I realized there were three different designs. This next photo is the dinner plate with rope edging. There are no flutes around the edge.
Colonial Fluted is a simple design that people apparently used back when their glass was new. Several of the plates we had were badly scratched and had utensil marks. It’s sturdy and I don’t recall any chips, but as with any plain-centered pattern, check centers for wear.
You most likely will need to shop online for Colonial Fluted unless you find a set as we did. It’s often labeled “depression glass” without pattern in antique malls. eBay mid April 2023 has a good assortment of Colonial Fluted and I saw a few Hostess pieces mixed in. Prices seemed in line with the item and condition.
Colonial Fluted is a simple pattern that can be fun to use and it’s one of the more affordable depression patterns.
