Last post I shared our recent acquisition, the Florentine #1 pink depression glass sherbet. (You can read that post here.)
Besides this shape, Hazel Atlas used this same pretty mold etched design on a second shape, called Florentine #2. Just for comparison, here is the Florentine #2 shape.
See how #2 is angular while #1 has a rounded bowl? This is a much easier way to tell the two shapes apart. Sometimes if you are buying online it’s hard to see whether the foot is scalloped – those are tiny scallops! But you can always tell by the overall shape.
Remember, Florentine #1 Poppy has rounded shapes for sherbets, cups, sugars, creamers, while Florentine #2 has the same design but on more angular shapes. I like both but slightly prefer the #1 shape because it’s curvy and interesting. Be aware, those scallops can get little nicks on their top edges so you always want to check them out carefully before buying.
I don’t know whether collectors came up with the #1 and #2 designations or that is how Hazel Atlas originally called them, or whether they lumped them all under Florentine. Gene Florence mentions that #1 was promoted as hexagonal while #2 was round and that both were advertised and shown in mixed lots. They do go well together as the colors and pattern are identical.
