What’s the Difference Between Elegant Glass and Depression Glass – Different Decorating Techniques
Diana from Federal Glass is a dinnerware pattern in pink, crystal or amber, sometimes crystal with platinum or colored bands. The dinnerware pieces include plates, bowls, including a cream soup bowl, cups and saucers, creamer, sugar, sherbet plus several serving bowls, two serving plates and a tumbler.
There are crystal or pink demitasse cups and saucers that look like children’s play dishes and are quite pretty. This set is crystal trimmed with platinum.
For comparison, here is the normal size cup and saucer in amber.
Federal made two lovely console bowls in crystal, pink and amber to augment the large salad serving bowl. I have seen several of the crystal ones. Here are the two styles, the first with scalloped rim and the second with a plain, smooth rim.
Diana was quite plentiful in mid-Michigan when I actively was buying glass; I found a partial set in amber and we got many pieces of crystal and pink too. I did not see many dinner plates, but bowls, which are often among the harder pieces in depression glass dinnerware, to find, were available.
The pieces have sturdy shapes, with pointed handles and smooth rims (other than the console bowl shown). I didn’t see much problem with chipping or nicked rims on the Diana we saw but do check those angular handle edges.
There are several depression patterns that have spirals. You can tell Diana apart because the individual ribs are fine and there are two sets of spirals, one on the inside or center and one on the rim. The bowls and cups shown above don’t show the center spiral well, take a look at this platter to see.
Diana is a nice pattern to collect. You can get a set to use for meals or choose one of the neat accessory pieces, such as the console bowl or the candy dish with cover.
Federal made all pieces in crystal and pink and all except the demitasse set in amber. We used to see more crystal than either other color.
You don’t have to worry about reproductions of Diana as there are none (per my reference books), nor are the pieces easy to damage. Just now I saw several pieces on eBay and the prices were reasonable.
