Jeannette Glass made Doric and Pansy the last two years that they made their similar Doric depression glass. You can tell them apart by looking at the little squares. Doric and Pansy has pansy flowers in the spaces in between the Doric design instead of plain squares as does Doric. Jeannette used their deep teal ultra marine colored glass for Doric and Pansy with some pieces also in pink and crystal. I’ve seen mostly ultra marine and some pink. It’s one pattern Jeannette included a child’s set of doll dishes called Pretty Polly Party Dishes. Here is the pink Pretty Polly cup and saucer.
Doric and Pansy has basic dinnerware pieces. There are 3 plates, the 6 inch sherbet liner, salad plate and 9 inch dinner plate, but only one place setting bowl.
There are two serving bowls, creamer and sugar, salt and pepper.
This pattern has no serving platter per se although there is a two-handled round tray that is 10 inches across and suitable to serve most foods.
One of the most interesting pieces is the butter dish with lid. We were fortunate to find an estate sale with many ultra marine Doric and Pansy pieces including this butter dish. Notice the design around the rim on the bottom, on the finial.
The creamer and sugar are interesting pieces and I’m showing them partly to point out a potential spot for nicks. Take a good look right near the top rim. There are little grooves with ridges just below the rim and those ridges can nick. The other place that can be rough is the edge of the groove between the row of squares and the row of pansy plants. I didn’t see much damage to either place in the pieces we had, only a tiny nick.
The sugar is open, there is no lid for it.
Jeannette made 2 Doric and Pansy tumblers in ultra marine. Both are flat and hold 9 or 10 ounces.
The Pretty Polly Party Dishes come in ultra marine or pink and the set includes cup and saucer, creamer and sugar, and a plate. The toy plates we had were 5 3/4 inches across, slightly smaller than the nominal measurement in my reference book or than the 6 inch sherbet plate in the full size set.
Doric and Pansy is somewhat harder to find than some depression glass patterns and pieces are more expensive. You might find some at antique malls or estate sales, but for best selection look online or go to glass shows. One factor that complicates this pattern is that the ultra marine color varies. Some pieces are distinctly more green than others. We had 4 dinner plates, 2 were the true teal, 1 was almost green and 1 far more blue.
Overall it’s a truly lovely pattern with a charming design. It has not been reproduced.
