Doric is an unusual pattern for depression glass as it has three tumblers as part of its lineup. A few other patterns, notably Mayfair and Cameo from Hocking and Iris and Herringbone and Cherry Blossom from Jeannette have several tumblers in their patterns but many other patterns have none.
The Doric tumblers have alternating squares of plain and Doric-design in a band near the rim and wide panels with low ridges below. Tumbler bases have the Doric design. There are three to choose among, a flat water glass that holds 9 ounces and is 4 1/2 inches tall, a slightly shorter one that has a small foot and holds 10 ounces and a 5 inch tall ice tea that holds 12 ounces and also has the slight foot.
The footed ice tea tumbler looks much like the 10 ounce footed tumbler, only taller.
You may have noticed that I lack photos for all three sizes. I have seen these tumblers at depression glass shows but have never owned one myself. All three tumblers are quite expensive in either pink or green, as makes sense for any drinking glass that is nearly 90 years old. Tumblers get a lot of hard use; think how many times you or your kids spill their drinks, that’s why they tend to be among the harder pieces to find in many vintage patterns.
Doric is a very pretty pattern especially in Jeannette’s clear green shade. I hope you enjoyed looking at this pattern from the mid 1930s.
