Pink Saturday – What’s Pink and Has Flowers All Over?
Floral is a gorgeous pattern from Jeannette in green or pink plus limited number of pieces in Delphite blue, Jadeite kitchenware, and per reference books a very few pieces amber, crystal, red, black and yellow. When we shopped I saw many pink and green pieces and must say the green is especially striking with the big pattern of flowers and leaves. The nickname for Floral is Poinsettia. Neither the flowers nor the leaves look much like poinsettias but the nickname stuck.
Floral is a dinnerware pattern with many decorative and accessory items and a few pieces of kitchenware. Jeannette made all the pieces one needs to set the dinner table, plates, cups and saucers, bowls, serving pieces, tumblers. For plates you can get a 6 inch sherbet liner aka bread and butter plate, 8 inch salad/lunch, 9 inch dinner or 9 inch grill plate.
This is the dinner plate:
Notice the pattern continues from the center right into the rim and that the shape is round with no hard edges that are prone to inner rim roughness. Cups are usually flat although Gene Florence reports that some have been found in England that are slightly footed. Jeannette made a true saucer with cup ring.
In pink, green or Delphite look for a small berry bowl, about 4 inches across or a footed, round sherbet, both usable for a side dish . There is also a 2-handled cream soup in green or pink, but these are uncommon and costly. There is no soup bowl nor cereal bowl. Jeannette made a cute small bowl with a ruffled rim in pink only.
Floral includes sufficient serving pieces, salt and pepper, two platters, a round bowl, oval bowl, covered vegetable bowl, butter dish, relish plate, creamer and sugar and three pitchers.
This is the smaller platter. Notice it has a curved inside edge.
Next are the two open serving bowls, the lovely round green Floral bowl and the oval pink vegetable bowl. (I don’t know why oval bowls are referred to as “vegetable bowls”.)
Butter dishes are popular with many collectors, probably because they show off the patterns so well. The Floral one is round, so you would have to cut butter sticks to fit inside. The flower and leaf design is all over the lid and the base.
The relish plate is quite plain, a medium sized oval dish divided in two with open handles. I like how the leaf motif is in the center of the base with a big flower on either side.
The creamer is flat, almost chunky feeling.
Of the three pitchers, this one pictured, 8 inches tall, footed, cone-shaped that holds a quart is the most common. It’s a beautiful piece.
There are 5 green Floral tumblers, from the 3 ounce size to the 9 ounce footed lemonade tumbler. There are fewer to choose from in pink, all footed, 3, 7 and 9 ounce sizes. This pink tumbler shown is the easiest size to find, a small footed water tumbler that holds 7 ounces.
One of the best things about Floral Poinsettia is the vast array of accessory pieces. Choose from the practical coaster, refrigerator dishes or cannister set, to the decorative candle holder, comport, dresser set, ice tub, lamp, or vase with optional frog insert..
There are thee green vases in this pattern, but no pink ones. There is a flower frog insert too, most likely to fit the shorter, wider rose bowl vase.
Floral in green is one of my favorites. I like the color and the big, flamboyant leaves and flowers strewn across the pieces. The huge choice of pieces, dinnerware, drinkware, decorative accessory and kitchenware make it a great choice for collectors. It’s always fun to get a few pieces easily to start, just so you have some to use, then have more pieces that are harder to find.
Per my Gene Florence depression glass reference, the shakers are the only pieces reproduced as of 2009. Dark blue, red, dark green shakers are obvious fakes because Jeannette didn’t make shakers in those colors. To distinguish real from reproduction pink shakers Florence recommends checking the screw thread on the top. Original Floral shakers have two parallel threads while the new ones have one continuous thread.
Floral doesn’t seem particularly prone to damage. Since pieces lack sharp inner rims one doesn’t have much concern for inner rim roughness which plagues many patterns. Instead do your usual due diligence checks on rims and handles and around the base and look out for surface wear or haze.
If you decide you like Floral then I hope you enjoy collecting and using it.
