We’ve been looking at one of Fostoria’s most successful patterns, Century this past week. You can see some very pretty candle holders here and several interesting pieces like the cheese and cracker set here. Let’s look at the dinnerware pieces – plates and dishes you use for dinner.
The dinner plate says it all: round shapes, lovely crystal, plain centers, ground base rim, slightly flared rims. These are substantial enough that you can use them for dinner without feeling like they would break the first time you used them. Cups are footed with handles that look like two C shapes back to back.
I purchased a large set where most of the dinner plates showed signs of use. They had light wear and utensil scratches but none had any nicks or cracks. Plain crystal tends to show wear more than patterned pieces so if you absolutely don’t want to see any wear you’ll want to use the pieces a little differently than Fostoria intended.
Salad plates are great for dessert or to serve sandwiches. Or put a crystal plate under a solid china plate for a bit of sparkle. That’s a fun tip I learned from Susan of Between Naps on the Porch.
Or follow my recommendation: Relax and enjoy using these beautiful examples of American craftsmanship.
