I love the Art Deco styling. There’s something about the smooth curves and geometric contracts that feels so sensuous. And it is especially lovely in glass where the transparency lets you see inside and outside the curvy shapes. Here’s one of my favorite Art Deco designs, the scroll candle holder from Fostoria, this one in topaz yellow with the June etch.
June is a lovely combination on the scroll shape. The bouquets tied with ribbons and bows fit perfectly on each side of the foot, leaving the stem and scrolled top plain, or as plain as Fostoria’s great crystal can be.
I have this June candle holder in azure blue glass plus the topaz and it’s a toss up which I like better. I’m partial to the warm good cheer that yellow glass brings, but the blue is stunning.
Fostoria made this candle holder in a shorter shape too, which does not have the long, graceful stem. It is attractive but to me it lacks the perfection of this taller design. I’ve only seen the shorter candle holder a couple of times and have not seen it etched. It doesn’t have the same happy, joyful look that this taller shape does.
Fostoria used this same candle holder with other etched patterns, Versailles, Trojan and the brocade etches. Besides this sunny clear topaz yellow and blue, look for this Art Deco shape in pink, clear, green and ebony black. It is lovely in any color, with and without an etch. Something this luscious doesn’t need an etch to stand out.
