Last two posts we showed Fostoria Melrose and Fostoria Beverly, two Fostoria patterns from the late 1920s that had large lattice shapes separated by small motifs. Fostoria made several patterns with similar designs including today’s etch, Virginia. (You can read the earlier post about Melrose here and Beverly here.)
Take a good look at the lattice field; see how it resembles fish scales? That’s quite similar to Fostoria Melrose and the little flower motif is also similar. Virginia flower spray is a laid horizontally in semi circle shape with the biggest flower in the center. Melrose has a vertical bouquet. The lattice in Beverly is made of cross-hatched lines that form a shield shape.
Fostoria made Virginia from 1923 to 1929, right as consumers were accepting glass dishes for dinnerware. In fact Virgina includes several dinnerware place setting pieces like the dinner and salad plates, although there are more pieces of stemware or accessory pieces like pitchers or comports.
Don’t confuse this older etched crystal pattern called Virginia with the much later, heavy colonial-styled design that came in colors. The etch is very different, and to me, much more appealing.
We’re nearly done with our survey of these older Fostoria etches with lattice motifs. I love looking at these older, very elegant patterns and hope you do too.
