Summer has come with a vengeance today! It is nearly 90 outside and muggy. I was gardening this morning and it felt so good to clean up and get all the dirt and bug spray off.
Green is a soft, cool color and it comes to life in depression glass like our glass pick of the week, the Cameo round serving bowl from Hocking. Hocking’s Cameo is one of my favorite patterns. I like the swags and scrolls, the medallion in the center and the joyful dancing girl in the cameo motif.
Serving bowls like this one are excellent choices if you plan to get only a few pieces of depression glass, just enough for a vintage, fun look. You can float flowers in this one, use it for display or serve vegetables or a salad. It’s a good accessory piece that has enough presence to stand out by itself.
Hocking made two other Cameo serving bowls. One is the oval vegetable bowl and the other is listed as a console bowl. This one has three peg feet and a wide rim. I have not seen the this larger footed bowl in person; it looks neat in pictures but I’d be wary of that rim which looks easy to chip.
One reason Cameo is so popular – aside from its good looks – is that there are a lot of pieces you can collect. If you enjoy antiquing it is so much more enjoyable to go looking for something, and with a pattern that has many pieces you can look for a long time. Yet Cameo is relatively available and most green pieces are affordable. I have this serving bowl listed for $69.99 with free shipping. The yellow is also reasonably easy to find and moderately priced but most pieces of pink are scarce and more costly.
Luckily the green is lovely. Hocking’s green depression glass is a pure shade of green and it looks wonderful in this Cameo pattern.
