Isn’t this pretty? Heisey Glass was known for the quality of their stemware and their elegant etchings and one of the most popular is this fine Orchid etch.
Orchid is a plate etching, meaning the goblet was coated with wax, artisans applied tissue templates to the surface, the design was scribed through the tissue into the wax and then the goblet was immersed in acid. Once the acid had enough time to dissolve the unprotected glass, the workers removed it, washed the acid off and did final steps, again by hand. Goblets like these had over 25 steps of hand work, so you can see why they were expensive when they were produced.
Today they would be even more costly to manufacture, one reason you just do not find contemporary etched crystal of this quality. If you like high quality glassware, especially etched pieces, then you’ll find the best in vintage glass like this goblet.
