I like Fostoria Romance. It has ribbons tied up in bows around flowers and the stemware is Fostoria Sceptre which is very nice. I’ve had this glass for a couple years, selling a piece here and a piece there. Suddenly Romance is hot with several new admirers!
My two boxes of Romance are down to about half a box, and it’s only that much because one item is the center handled server. (The server is of course my favorite piece. I dote on those.)
Fostoria made other patterns with ribbons and bows. We know June of course because it has two ribbons and Fostoria made it on pink, blue and yellow plus crystal. Romance is only crystal. The other two ribbon and bow patterns are not so well known, Festival and Satin Ribbons, both simplified designs made in the 1980s.
Romance is one of Fostoria’s transition patterns that they made from the end of the depression era in the 1930s until 1971. Once styles shifted towards the simple designs (think the Jackie Kennedy look) patterns like this lost traction and Fostoria made fewer and fewer pieces each year.
Fostoria attempted to resurrect top patterns like Romance in 1980 as part of their Nostalgia line, but it must not have been too successful. Fostoria went out of business in the mid 1980s.
I’d like to think our styles are shifting back now to classic designs with some ornamentation but not too much. Fostoria Romance is tasteful, not gaudy or overdone. Guess I’m not the only one who enjoys this design!
