This week several people asked for help identifying their glass and I was glad to recognize the design for a few of them. Two especially stood out for being a little unusual; both were lovely shades of medium light blue.
Donna’s glass is Janice from New Martinsville. New Martinsville started making Janice way back in 1926 and continued until the company was reorganized as Viking Glass. From my book Elegant Glassware of the Depression Era Thirteenth Edition by Gene and Cathy Florence, Viking reused the original molds to make candle holders. Apparently only a few pieces were reproduced, and not in this lovely medium light blue color. It’s always good to know that your pattern hasn’t been reproduced!
I’ve seen only a couple pieces of Janice in person here in Michigan. It was made for such a long time that it must be around, reasonably available, but you couldn’t prove it by me!
This next piece is from Kate. You might recognize it too! The pattern is Baroque from Fostoria, a pattern that’s pretty in crystal and stunning in blue or topaz. Fostoria made crystal Baroque for a long time, 1936 to 1966, and used it for many etches. They made the blue for only a few years, 1937 to 1943, and it is more scarce today.
Donna and Kate, thank you for posting your pictures! We all enjoy seeing glass.
Remember, you can get help from me and the other glass lovers on our Facebook page at www.DepressionGlassFun.com. Just post a photo that shows the design clearly. I’ll do what I can to help. Just say thank you when we’re done.
