Do you like cream and sugar in your coffee? Back in the day glass companies made at least two sizes of cream and sugar sets in popular patterns. The smaller was the “individual” size while the larger was the size we find today on our breakfast tables.
A couple could fill the small size with cream and use the whole amount – no waste. Larger families, or dinners with guests used the larger sized sets.
This is the creamer and sugar set in Fostoria’s Century crystal. You can tell this is meant for one or two people. One reason I like it is the shapes are pleasing and the size is easy to slip on the table or put in the cupboard.
It’s interesting that almost all the glass companies made trays like this one for the mini sized sets. Offhand I can’t think of a pattern that had a tray sized to hold the larger creamer and sugar; they must not have been as popular.
These little sets are another example of how practical people were. The creamer held just enough to use at one sitting. The sugar was not too large either; if both put sugar in their coffee or on the cereal then it would also be empty at the end of breakfast. The tray kept everything together and tidy and kept the drips from staining the table cloth or damaging the table. Really, these are excellent ideas we could follow today.
