Federal Glass made Normandie for 7 years, a long time for depression glass where most patterns lasted only a few years. Nonetheless it is not plentiful! (We’ll cover what “not plentiful” means in more detail next week.) Also you won’t find the plethora of pieces in Normandie that Federal made in Madrid or even Patrician.
Normandie lacks decorative accessory pieces. There is no cookie jar, nor butter dish, no candle holder nor gravy boat, not even an ashtray. Federal made a reasonable set of Normandie dinnerware, with plates, place setting bowls, cup and saucer, creamer and sugar, plus salt and pepper shakers, serving bowls and a platter.
You can also look for a beverage set as there is a nice sized pitcher and your choice of thee tumblers and a sherbet.
You can choose pink or amber; the two colors have the same pieces. The iridescent Sunburst color lacks the tumblers, shakers, pitcher and salad plate.
I’ve always liked dishes that include bowls and Normandie has two choices for dinnerware, this small 5 inch sauce dish and a larger bowl meant for cereal.
We would consider this cereal bowl a little small for soup, but there is no cream soup or other bowl to use. This one is 6 1/2 inches across which includes the rim. The actual bowl is only about 5 1/4 inches wide and not real deep.
You may find 5 sizes of plates in pink or amber, basically the same ones we see in Patrician or Madrid. There is a 6 inch sherbet plate, which we call a bread and butter plate nowadays, a salad plate which is about the right size for dessert. The luncheon plate is 9 1/4 inches wide, which sounds larger than a typical lunch plate – usually around 8 inches – but remember the rim is fairly wide. The dinner plate is also on the large size at 11 inches, about the same as Patrician, plus there is a grill plate, shown below in Sunburst. I’ve never had any pink or amber plates in stock except the salad plate although I’ve seen most of the sizes.
Tumblers are the usual basic sizes, juice, water and iced tea, and I believe all are flat, none are footed tumblers. (Incidentally Replacements has several pieces in stock that I’ve rarely seen including the oval platter if you want to see pictures.)
The sherbet could substitute for a small bowl as it holds quite a bit.
Overall, if you want pink or amber depression glass dinnerware that has tumblers in the pattern, then Normandie fits the bill.
