Last week Deidra and I went antiquing in several malls near San Antonio. We found several lovely pieces of glass – identified correctly, clean and pretty – in a mall in Gruene Texas plus a couple items in a mall in San Antonio. I was too busy admiring and forgot to get photos until we were nearly through. Please overlook the cell phone in a retail setting photo quality!
I’ve shown you my Royal Lace pink candle holder with a rolled top before, and mentioned that Hazel Atlas made other, similar styles with different top treatments. This set here is crystal with a flat, straight top, priced to sell at $12.50 for the pair.
Here’s a second photo to show the side.
For comparison here is my rolled rim holder.
Cherry Blossom is a gorgeous depression glass pattern with mold-etched flowers set in panels that sadly has been reproduced. I was glad to see authentic footed tumblers. One clue these are real, not reproduction, is the presence of three horizontal ridges right above the pattern panels.
Although we did find a few pieces of Whitehall mislabeled as Fostoria American, this bowl is Fostoria. The Whitehall bowls usually had little peg feet and if you look closely at my (bad) photo you can see this piece has curved feet.
We inherited a set of Franciscan Apple dinnerware from my Mom where the deep cereal/soup bowls are in rather bad shape. I was delighted when we spotted this set until we got close enough to see that it’s the new issue. The older Franciscan has raised apples, leaves and twigs that are carefully hand painted with darker shades. These bowls are in great shape but lack the bas relief and the colors are lighter.
This casserole was tempting. It’s the older style and we don’t have this piece. It was also a bit more than I wanted to spend.
One booth had shelves full of depression glass. One of my favorite patterns is Jeannette’s Floral, or Poinsettia, especially in green.
Not sure whether the cups shown above the Floral sherbets are Spiral or Twisted Optic, it always takes me a bit to check, but I think they are Spiral from Hocking.
This same booth had Miss America in both pink and crystal. I got two pictures of the pink so you could see the cups and saucers, plates and comports. Very nice and sold individually.
Last we went to a mall right in San Antonio. They didn’t have as much glass as the first one did. The winner here is this beautiful decorated pink satin depression glass console bowl and holders.
We had a lot of fun together, looking at glass, browsing an art gallery in Gruene, eating lunch (we did a lot of that), but the best part was talking and laughing with my favorite antiquing buddy!
