Now that it’s fall that bowl of soup sure sounds good and what a charming way to use your depression glass cream soup bowl. This pretty ruffled dish looks like a candy dish or nut cup but it is actually the cream soup bowl in Florentine #1 pink depression glass.
We’ve talked before about bouillon cups and cream soup bowls as being some of the neat pieces of depression glass dinnerware. Not all patterns had regular rimmed soup bowls, some had cream soups instead, and some had a full range of bowls, cream soups, bouillon cups and wide flat bowls for just regular soup. Cream soup bowls are about the same size as a cereal bowl with two handles. Bouillon cups are usually just a little smaller and rimmed soup bowls are wider and flatter.
Given how much room most of have (or don’t have) in our cupboards, the cream soup bowls are more practical than the wide shallow soups. You can stack them although the handles make it a little awkward, and they take up much less shelf space. Plus they are just neat pieces.
Florentine Poppy is one of my favorite depression patterns. It’s a little more refined than some and comes in a rainbow of pretty colors, sunny soft yellow, green, this light candy pink, clear and a few pieces in blue or amber. The shapes are interesting and it’s fun to collect and use.
Here are some past blog posts about cream soup bowls in other patterns. I write about them because I think they are neat and we have several in stock.
