Princess from Hocking Glass is one of the square-ish depression patterns we wrote about here. One of our last antiquing trips I got a set of Princess green grill plates and just got them listed. One of the plates has a bad chip so I didn’t list it. (If anyone wants it, just pay shipping and it’s yours.) The other two are perfect, some of the best condition plates I’ve seen; they don’t look used.
We don’t see grill plates often in contemporary dinnerware sets but back in the day they were a popular choice because the dividers made small portions look larger, and kept the gravy from soaking in the green beans. Remember, food was costly and people tended to overcook vegetables, making them soggy.
Those little handles on the sides are called “closed tab handles”. The “tab” part means they look like the tab on a file folder or notebook divider; they are small, rectangular (more or less) and an integral part of the plate. They are “closed” because the tab is completely filled with glass. “Open tab handles” have a hollow, open center, just as the name sounds.
We have the Princess grill plates listed on Etsy here.
