Hocking Glass made Queen Mary beginning in 1936 and continuing through WW2 to 1949; the heavier style with geometric design is typical of the late depression patterns and prescut designs Hocking made in the 1940s. Queen Mary has thin vertical ribs that catch the light, so attractive.
Hocking made a full dinnerware set in both pink and crystal although some pink pieces are much harder to find and more costly than the same in crystal. There are the usual plates, bowls, cups and saucers, serving pieces, plus tumblers and several interesting accessory/decorative pieces such as the candle holder that looks like a cactus, vase, ash tray. Here is the smaller bowl.
The crystal candle holder is unusual and looks good. Hocking made some candle holders in Royal Ruby but none in pink.
I never particularly shopped for Queen Mary but bought it when I found it in good condition and affordable (remember I was buying to resell). Nonetheless we ended up with some interesting pieces such as these salt and pepper shakers.
Hocking made this clover-shaped relish in both Queen Mary and Moonstone, it’s a neat piece.
We had only a few pieces of pink Queen Mary, such as this round 2-part relish.
Hocking apparently found smokers a good market. They made a Queen Mary cigarette jar and four ashtrays. Some of the ashtrays can double as coasters, as this next one. They made this shape in Forest Green and Royal Ruby too.
One other ashtray is oval, likely meant to go on a card table because it’s smaller and easier to fit in a crowded space.
You can see that the tops of each piece are squared off, not rounded. One would think this makes the tops of the ribs rather vulnerable to chipping, especially bowls or plates that are stacked. Always put a paper towel or plate between each piece when you stack depression glass.
If you enjoy depression glass and would like to collect a pattern that is fairly easy to find, affordable and has lots of nifty pieces, crystal Queen Mary would be a great choice. You can look for dinnerware for a lovely, unusual table setting, or seek out the serving pieces or decorative items. eBay as of today has a good selection or you can have fun shopping antique malls and estate sales or glass shows.
