This week we celebrate pink depression glass with this Floral Poinsettia pink footed tumbler.
I’m entranced by the signature pieces of the depression era: center handled servers, console bowls, etched candle holders, tilted pitchers and these cone-shaped footed tumblers. These are just so delightful. As soon as you see one of these tumblers you know you are slipping back in time, back to the era of wonderful glass. That era gave us great glass but other things were not so wonderful.
Jeannette made Floral in the early part of the depression, 1932 to 1935, when things were really tough in this country. Massive unemployment, bread lines are what we think of when we think of the depression. Our images are formed from pictures of men in fedoras in grainy black and white. Somehow the gorgeous colors and designs slipped in there, almost not noticed in movies. I can believe this lovely glass added cheer when families needed it most.
It’s interesting that stylish glass and the wonderful pieces and shapes we don’t see, the colors and pretty designs, all happened when things were at the rock bottom for many of our families.
Thanks for visiting our Pink Saturday pink depression glass post this week, and as always a big thank you to Beverly of How Sweet the Sound for organizing this fun event. Please be sure to visit the other bloggers to see how pink we can be.
