Georgian depression glass from Federal is one of my favorite patterns. The shapes and motifs are lovely and while there are many pretty patterns out there – Cameo or Dogwood come to mind – it’s been a favorite since I first started with glass. Why?
#1. For one thing, I used to see quite a bit of Georgian at the local flea market and I enjoyed buying it, seeing the different pieces, holding it, laying it out on a table. Some patterns that are very lovely are also very hard to find in quantity or I never had a ton of them to admire. So reason #1 is familiarity.
#2. Georgian is usually green and I love green. Federal’s green depression glass mixes well with others and is especially striking with blue or mixed in small quantities with other colors like pink, yellow or crystal. This table setting of green Georgian with some blue Moderntone and Aurora looks like springtime. Reason #2 is color.
#3. The pieces have nice round shapes, appealing, attractive and easy to hold and use. Reason #3 is shape.
#4. There is a good assortment of pieces, including usable tumblers, dinnerware, serving pieces like butter dishes or big bowls and platters. Georgian Lovebirds has little side dish bowls and cereal bowls, plus the usual complement of plates for sherbet liners, lunch and dinner. The tumblers are special, lovely thin shapes with the bird and floral motifs. Reason #4 is the piece assortment available.
#5. Federal made several pieces with different motifs. Some dinner plates have birds and flowers and some have only a plainer band on the rim, no birds or flowers. There are big creamers and sugars as in the first photo and small creamers and sugars. I enjoy the differences. Reason #5 is the fun we can have with differences.
This plate is the small sherbet liner to show the birds and flowers motif.
This dinner plate has a plain band on the rim, no birds.
#6. Georgian has birds and flowers, what’s not to like? Reason #6 is I love birds and flowers.
