Tonight I want to do something special for Pink Saturday. Yes, this is a book with a pinkish red cover. The reason I’m showing this book is to honor and thank Gene Florence. Let me explain.
I found eBay in 1999 and kept browsing the glass. I loved it. It was so fascinating and I thought hey, I can do this. Remember that before this I had zero knowledge of glass and didn’t even know people collected this. I wanted a business and decided glass was it.
A few auctions later I had a few boxes of glass and the only one I identified was Candlewick. I would go through the glass listings on eBay and match the pictures to my glass. Back then the glass listings took up just a few pages.
Enter Amazon and Gene Florence. I bought Florence’s depression guide and then his elegant glass guide and poof! Voila! I could identify most of my glass. (Would you believe I finally identified the last piece of that initial purchase this year??)
Florence books gave me the confidence to buy glass and know how to describe and price it. More important, Florence’s books are best sellers and have expanded the market and interest in depression glass. People are afraid to buy or sell when they don’t know what they have and Florence’s books are great to smooth the way.
Mr. Florence suffered a stroke last year. My prayers are with him and his family.
Shopping Information: We are adding my older depression and elegant glass books to our store Cat Lady Kate’s Elegant and Depression Glass.
Thanks for visiting our Pink Saturday pink depression glass post this week, and as always a big thank you to Beverly of How Sweet the Sound for organizing this fun event. Please be sure to visit the other bloggers to see how pink we can be.
