You’ve probably seen vintage bowls with ruffled rims and maybe you wondered how useful that style could be. Dave gave me a ruffled bowl for Christmas and I can say from experience that it works great for salad.
The ruffled rim makes it easy to hold – I was surprised just how much easier it was to hold and pass at dinner than the plain rims – and the bowl is about 3 inches deep, deep enough to keep from spilling.
Here it is with a salad a friend brought to share.
Another thing I love about this bowl is the width. It makes a plain tossed salad look fabulous, lets you see more pieces and enjoy the intricate ruffling and colors of the romaine.
Cambridge made several bowls similar to this one. This first one looks the same except flattened and no ruffles, thus about 12 inches wide instead of the 11 inches wide that my taller bowl measures. I never tried the wide shape as a serving piece but I bet it would also work, probably especially well for fruit salad with its beautiful colors.
This next one is ruffled, but shallower and wider, about 13 inches across. This particular bowl is Elaine etched but you can find the same bowl with Rose Point.
If you want a lovely bowl, for salad or fruit or just because, you cannot go wrong with vintage glass!
