Federal made Yorktown, this solid looking glass pattern with Colonial styling, in the 1950s and early 60s. Yorktown is a small pattern with basic dinnerware, drinkware and interesting accessories like this footed fruit bowl.
Federal used the colors of the 1950s and 1960s, crystal, iridized crystal, and yellow, with a few pieces made in smoke, green, and white. This tumbler is the iridized crystal.
Yorktown is rather attractive with solid shapes that complement the thumbprint design. This sugar bowl has the thumbprints around the lid and finial and the base.
I used to see Yorktown at flea markets but only the crystal and iridized crystal. You can find the yellow online easily and it appears most pieces are available.
The dinnerware pieces are limited to a small sauce dish/berry bowl, lunch and dinner plates, cup and saucer.
You can choose among three tumblers, ranging from a 6 ounce juice to a 13 ounce iced tea. All tumblers are footed. There is also a stemmed sherbet and Replacements shows a stemmed tumbler which my Gene Florence reference book does not mention.
There are several accessory or serving pieces, a large flat serving bowl, oval celery, creamer and sugar.
One fun piece is the mug, a rather unusual addition to glass dinnerware patterns. Also look for a snack set consisting of a rectangular plate with inset ring and cup, vase and a punch set.
The punch set has a large, deep bowl to hold the punch that sets on top of a second bowl turned upside down. This second bowl has a wide base to hold the punch bowl. You can tell the punch bowl base from the 9 1/2 inch serving bowl by the rim. The punch bowl has a smooth rim as shown below while the serving bowl has a scalloped rim. Of course you can turn the punch base right side up and use it as a bowl too.
Yorktown is not costly, especially considering it is about 60 years old and you can find it online if your local antique malls or flea markets don’t have what you want. It’s a sturdy pattern too.
There are several colonial-styled glass patterns that have oval thumbprints but you shouldn’t have any problem spotting Yorktown and telling it apart. Yorktown slightly resembles Heisey Whirlpool (aka Provincial) elegant glass pattern but is easily differentiated. Whirlpool pieces are shaped differently, the thumbprints are more rounded, the glass is much higher quality and pieces will have ground base rims. None of the Yorktown plates or bowls will have ground base rims.
If you like colonial thumbprint styling then Yorktown is an excellent choice. Enjoy the fun pieces or set your table for family meals.
